SAFETY MANAGEMENT SERVICES
A workplace safety culture is our clients´ best safeguard against accident and injury.
In the September 2007 Review of the Tasmanian Workers´ Compensation System for the State Government, Alan Clayton cites literature indicating that the strongest and most consistent correlation to effective and durable return to work following a workplace injury is a strong and supportive workplace culture. Studies have indicated a positive correlation with low lost workday rates in relation to other organizational policy and practice in relation to health workplace culture, including those for:
Active safety leadership − top management support of safety and allocation of resources;
Safety diligence − attention to worker safety measures such as equipment maintenance.
Best practice Occupational Health and Safety Management can:
- Increase your business productivity and profitability,
- Ensure that risks within your business are identified, assessed, controlled and reviewed, and
- Assist in reducing workplace accidents and your workers compensation claim costs.
Davey & Maynard provide integrated Human Resource and Safety management services for Tasmanian business. We focus on injury prevention with recruitment practices that incorporate pre-employment health assessments, new employee induction programs and the development of safe work practices and health and safety awareness training.
The following services are available to assist our clients to achieve their workplace health and safety goals.
The Development of a Safety Management Plan
will incorporate all aspects of occupational health and safety including policies, appointment of health and safety representative and committees, communication and consultation requirements, risk assessment calculation tools, recording and reporting requirements, job safety analysis, safe work procedures, hazardous substances management, prestart checks and safety inspection checklists. Assistance can also be provided to ensure that a Safety Management Plan is effectively integrated into your business requirements and implemented accordingly. A comprehensive and implemented Safety Management Plan will ensure that our clients comply with all relevant legislations and develop a positive safety culture at their workplace.
Safety Management Plans will be referenced to legislative and industry requirements including the Tasmanian Occupational Health and Safety Act 1995, Regulations 1998, relevant Australian Standards and Codes of Practice.
Workplace Audits and Inspections
can be conducted on an overall existing Safety Management Plan or in a particular area of the workplace. Inspections can also be arranged for itemised issues, for example housekeeping, signage, demarcation, or emergency equipment. A schedule of inspection can be arranged as an ongoing service, or alternatively an annual audit may be satisfactory for a particular workplace.
Risk Assessments can be arranged
to suit specific requirements utilising risk assessment tools suitable for the workplace. Assessments will result in a logical calculation of risk with an outcome of practical recommendations. Risk Assessment tools may be customised to suit our clients and then documented in a program that can be utilised by employees. However, there may be an occasion when a thorough, unique assessment is required, for example when purchasing new plant or equipment.
Accident and Incident Investigations
can provide valuable insight into factors contributing to an incident, thereby reducing the risk of re-occurrence. Investigations may also be required for insurers or by Workplace Standards Tasmania. A comprehensive investigation of a particular incident, with recommendations, can be conducted if required. Alternatively, a complete analysis of past Accident and Incident data may be undertaken to determine risk areas and assist with future safety planning. Investigation Reports will be prepared promptly if necessary for legislative reporting requirements.
Safe Work Procedures
document the safest way known to perform a task and provide details relating to risks associated with that task. Procedures are developed specifically for our clients´ workplace and employees based on industry best practice. A Job Safety Analysis process will be adhered to and prepared in consultation with employees resulting in a log of Safe Work Procedures for routine medium to high risk tasks.
Health and Safety Awareness Training
can be tailored to suit requirements based on such issues as manual handling, hazardous chemical awareness, duty of care requirements, conducting risk assessments, completing accident and incident reports or fatigue management. Employee induction programs can also be developed. We will advise our clients of any legislative licence or competency requirements relevant to the workplace.
Specialised Safety Services
can be arranged when requested. Examples include fatigue management surveys, noise testing, emergency management planning, health management programs and health monitoring.
INJURY MANAGEMENT SERVICES
Injury Management Services focus on injury prevention and management to ensure that our clients´ comply with relevant legislation in the event that an employee is injured at work. This service is based on assessed needs, ensuring that they are cost effective and outcome focused. Costs are claimable from the clients´ insurer to incorporate the development, implementation and review of Return to Work Plan and Rehabilitation Programs in accordance with the Tasmanian Workers Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 1988. Regular written reports provide an update on progress highlighting case status and future strategies.
With new Tasmanian legislation pending, we can arrange the development of injury management policy and procedures, identification of modified duties in your workplace, return to work and injury management plans and assistance with any specific requirements.
Injury Management Co-ordinators (IMC)
Our Consultants fulfil the role of Injury Management Co-ordinators by overseeing the entire injury management process. This service focuses on early intervention to achieve a timely, safe and durable return to work for injured workers. This is achieved through effective communication and consultation, and managing relationships between all parties incorporating the injured worker, the employer, primary medical practitioner, specialist medical practitioners, occupational rehabilitation service providers and insurers.
Our Consultants will attend medical appointments and co-ordinate recommended services. A Return to Work and Injury Management Plan will be developed, reviewed and updated. This will incorporate case conferences, workplace assessments, and monitoring of the injured worker´s progress.

VOCATIONAL ASSESSMENT
Introduction
Accurate assessment of the candidate´s needs and capacity is essential for the development of an appropriate Return to Work Plan, and for effective case management and referral to suitable vacancies.
The Davey & Maynard Vocational Assessment process provides a forum for collaborative decision making, and is dependent upon the active participation of the candidate. Participation may be an agreed activity of the candidate´s Return to Work Plan.
The Vocational Assessment complements the Return to Work process. Goals are agreed in the form of recommendations. These recommendations may be formalised by the Candidate’s Injury Management Co-ordinator in the Return to Work Plan. A full copy of the Vocational Assessment is provided to the Candidate´s Injury Management Co-ordinator and Workers Compensation Insurer with the Candidate´s consent sought at the commencement of the Assessment.
